Some destinations have and always will be popular. Corfu is one of those places. The famous Austrian empress Sissi has showed the way: she visited the island in 1861, spontaneously fell in love with it and decided to build a summer residence there. Not a bad idea...
The summer residence of Empress Sissi – the Achilleion – meets all romantic expectations. It is a classical palace in Italian style where it is wonderful to dream away at the many statues, painted ceilings and murals. A garden is situated around the palace with statues of the dying Achilles and the Nine Muses. From the Achilleion it is only a small distance to Kerkyra, better known as Corfu Town. This fortified town was built during Venetian rule and gave an impulse to both art and architecture. City walls rose up, as well as two fortresses and the stately boulevard Liston with its characteristic colonnade. In the narrow streets of Kerkyra, shops, coffee bars and cafes alternate.
